Pentecost Sunday, today marks the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the disciples after Jesus’ ascension into Heaven. It is celebrated 50 days after Easter Sunday ( Resurrection Sunday)
Acts 2:1–4 (NIV)
“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven… All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”
This marks the birth of the Church.
Acts 1:8 (NIV)
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
New - to write His word on our hearts
1. Purpose
2. Power
Acts 1:8 (NIV) “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses…”
- it is a purposeful anointing.. as well as a personal anointing
Spirit filled witnesses - bold, authentic - locally and globally.
What does the scripture say about being Jesus witness.
• Matthew 28:19-20
• Romans 10:14
• 2 Corinthians 5:20
The Meaning and definition of “Witness” is: A witness is someone who testifies to what they have seen, heard, or experienced.
You can’t share what you haven’t experienced..
That’s why Jesus told the disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit—so their witness would be established in divine experience, not just human knowledge.
A gift given by God!
We read in the scripture a beautiful example of Peter on the Day of Pentecost whom person and life was transformed.
Before Pentecost: Peter denied Jesus three times
(Luke 22:54-62). Peter was fearful, uncertain, hiding…denying Christ 3 times
After Pentecost:
Acts 2:14 – Peter stood up and preached with boldness.
Acts 2:37-41 – 3,000 people believed and were baptized.
Bold, faithful, empowered..
What changed? The Holy Spirit.
Peter’s life was transformed..
You can only witness what you’ve truly encountered. Seen, heard and experienced.
Peter says in Acts 4:20
“As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
To be a genuine witness, you must have:
1. Seen the goodness of God.
2. Heard and believe in His Word and promises.
3. Experienced His grace and transformation.
How Can We Be Authentic Witnesses for Jesus?
1. Receive the Holy Spirit daily
(Ephesians 5:18 – “Be filled with the Spirit.”)
It’s not a one-time experience—it’s a way of living.
2. Live out your testimony
People are watching. Your life is the loudest sermon you’ll ever preach.
3. Speak with boldness and love
(1 Peter 3:15 – “Always be prepared to give an answer… with gentleness and respect.”)
4. Stay connected to the Church
The early church was unified, prayerful, and mission-driven (Acts 2:42-47).
We’re not called to be lone rangers, but Spirit-filled community.
5. Be willing to go
Across the street, across the office, or across the world—witness wherever He sends you.
2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV)
“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”
You are empowered to be:
• A witness in your home
• A witness in your workplace
• A witness in your generation
Matthew 25:21 (NIV)
“Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.”
God is looking for the faithful.
Acts 2:1–4 (NIV)
“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven… All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”
So today, let us be like the early Church:
• Gathered in unity
• Filled with the Spirit
• Living out our faith boldly
• being Faithful in the small things
